چکیده

The chamber wall armor is subject to demanding conditions in both inertial fusion energy (IFE) and magnetic fusion energy (MFE) chambers. This paper assesses the requirements on armor imposed by the operating conditions in IFE and MFE, including energy deposition density, time of deposition and frequencies, and discusses their impact on the performance of the candidate armor materials. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Progress towards realization of a laser IFE solid wall chamber

The high average power laser (HAPL) program aims at developing laser inertial fusion energy (Laser IFE) based on lasers, direct drive targets and a solid wall chamber. The preferred first wall configuration is based on tungsten and ferritic steel as armor and structural materials, respectively. A key concern is the survival of the first wall under the X-ray and ion energy deposition from the fu...

IFE chamber walls: requirements, design options, and synergy with MFE plasma facing components

The wall of inertial fusion energy (IFE) chambers faces demanding conditions. IFE operation is cyclic in nature and following each micro-explosion, the chamber wall is subjected to a large flux of photons, energetic particles and neutrons. Key requirements are that: (i) the chamber wall accommodates the cyclic energy deposition while providing the required lifetime, and (ii) that after each sho...

Thin Liquid Wall Behavior under Ife Cyclic Operation

An inertial fusion energy (IFE) wetted wall configuration provides the advantage of a renewable armor to accommodate the threat spectra. Key issues are the re-establishment of the thin liquid armor and the state of the chamber environment prior to each shot relative to the requirements imposed by the driver and target thermal and injection control.

Snowmass Assessment of FIRE

The 2002 Fusion Summer Study was conducted from July 8-19, 2002, in Snowmass, Colorado, and carried out a critical assessment of major next-steps in the fusion energy sciences program in both Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) and Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE). The conclusions of this study were based on analysis led by over 60 conveners working with hundreds of members of the fusion energy sciences c...

Thermo-mechanical analysis of a micro-engineered tungsten-foam armored IFE FW

The high average power laser (HAPL) program goal is to develop a laser inertial fusion reactor using a solid first wall (FW). The FW of the inertial fusion energy (IFE) chamber is exposed to high energy photon, particle, and neutron fluxes at frequency of several Hz. The feasibility of using a micro-engineered refractory metals, such as tungsten foam as a solid FW armor is investigated. Refract...
